GUIDE / FILE PREP

How to export
a STEP file.

Almost every CAD program can save a STEP file. Here’s exactly where to find it in the most common tools, and how to make sure the export is ready for 3D printing.

SHORT ANSWER

In most CAD programs, use File → Export (or Save As) and choose STEP (*.stp, *.step). Export only the part you want printed, in millimetres if possible. Mesh-only apps like Tinkercad, Blender, and SketchUp’s free version can’t export true STEP files.

Autodesk Fusion (Fusion 360)

  1. Open your design.
  2. Go to File → Export.
  3. Set Type to STEP Files (*.stp, *.step).
  4. Choose a location and click Export.

Tip: if your design contains several bodies, hide the ones you don’t need, or copy the part into a new design before exporting.

SolidWorks

  1. Open the part (.sldprt).
  2. Go to File → Save As.
  3. Set Save as type to STEP AP214 (*.step; *.stp) (AP203 or AP242 also work).
  4. Click Save.

Onshape

  1. Right-click the part in the Parts list (or the Part Studio tab).
  2. Choose Export.
  3. Set Format to STEP and confirm the units.
  4. Click Export to download.

Autodesk Inventor

  1. Open the part (.ipt).
  2. Go to File → Export → CAD Format.
  3. Set Save as type to STEP Files (*.stp; *.ste; *.step; *.stpz).
  4. Click Save.

FreeCAD

  1. Select the final solid (for example, the Body or the last feature) in the model tree.
  2. Go to File → Export.
  3. Choose STEP with colors (*.step *.stp).
  4. Name the file and click Save.

Rhino

  1. Select the closed polysurface or solid you want printed.
  2. Go to File → Export Selected.
  3. Choose STEP (*.stp, *.step) and click Save.

Make sure the object is a closed solid; open surfaces can’t be printed.

Shapr3D

Use Export, choose STEP, select the body or bodies, and export.

What if my app only exports STL?

Tinkercad, Blender, and the free version of SketchUp work with meshes and can’t create true STEP geometry. You have two options:

  • Upload the STL, OBJ, or 3MF directly — we print those too. Note the intended size in millimetres.
  • Rebuild the part in a free CAD tool such as Onshape (free plan) or FreeCAD, then export STEP. Converting a mesh straight to STEP keeps every facet, so it doesn’t add accuracy.

Checklist before you upload

  • One part per file (or the single part you want quoted)
  • A closed, solid body — no open surfaces
  • Units set correctly (millimetres preferred)
  • File under 25 MB
  • Critical dimensions noted in your request

Questions

Is .stp the same as .step?+

Yes. .stp and .step are two extensions for the same STEP format (ISO 10303). We accept both.

Which STEP version should I choose, AP203, AP214, or AP242?+

Any of them work for 3D printing. AP214 is a common default. AP242 is the newest version.

Can Tinkercad export a STEP file?+

No. Tinkercad exports mesh formats such as STL and OBJ. You can upload those directly, or rebuild the part in a CAD tool that exports STEP for the most accurate result.
